Religious Education

Religious Education at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School, Wyoming

At Our Lady of the Rosary, Religious Education is at the heart of everything we do. As a Catholic school within the Catholic Schools Broken Bay (CSBB) system, we provide rich opportunities for students to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ, grow in faith, and live out Gospel values in their everyday lives. Our Religious Education program nurtures the spiritual, intellectual and moral development of each child, helping them become compassionate, reflective and active members of their communities.

Religious Education is integrated into all aspects of school life through classroom learning, prayer, liturgy, sacramental preparation, social justice initiatives and everyday interactions. Students are encouraged to explore their faith, ask questions, develop critical thinking skills, and recognise God’s presence in the world around them.

Kindergarten to Year 2

In the early years, Religious Education is grounded in approaches inspired by Maria Montessori and Sofia Cavalletti’s Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This recognises young children as naturally spiritual beings with a deep capacity for wonder, reflection and relationship with God. In Kindergarten to Year 2, teachers present Scripture through engaging storytelling that encourages students to reflect on God’s love and connect the stories of Jesus to their everyday lives.

Through engaging, hands-on experiences, storytelling, Scripture, prayer and liturgical celebrations, students are invited to:

  • Discover God’s love and care for all creation.
  • Develop a personal relationship with Jesus.
  • Reflect on Scripture through wonder and contemplation.
  • Explore the symbols, rituals and traditions of the Catholic faith.
  • Participate meaningfully in prayer and worship.
  • Connect faith learning with everyday experiences.

Students are provided with time and space to wonder, reflect and make connections between Gospel teachings and their own lives, fostering a strong foundation for lifelong faith development.

Years 3 to 6

As students progress through the primary years, they engage more deeply with the Catholic tradition through a structured and contemporary Religious Education curriculum developed by Catholic Schools Broken Bay.

Learning is organised across five key strands:

  • God and Religion
  • Jesus and Scripture
  • Morality and Justice
  • Church and Community
  • Prayer, Liturgy and Sacraments

Through these interconnected areas, students develop knowledge and understanding of Catholic beliefs and teachings while growing in their ability to reflect, reason and respond to contemporary issues through the lens of faith.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Explore God’s action throughout history and in their lives today.
  • Engage with Scripture and understand its relevance in the modern world.
  • Develop a commitment to justice, compassion and service.
  • Understand their role within the Church community.
  • Participate actively in prayer, liturgy and sacramental life.
